April 2013 Meeting Agenda


Post 229 will meet at the Madison Senior Center at 1900 on 11 18 April 2013 [NB. Rescheduled due to bad weather on the 11th.]. The agenda is as follows:

    • Memorial Day Poppies - When/where
    • Memorial Day Events - This year we will be placing flags on veterans' graves for Memorial Day. This will be done on Friday 24 May. We will be conducting a Memorial Day ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park on 27 May. Our speaker is TBD. We'll need volunteers for both activities.

    • Nomination of Officers for the 2013-2014 Fiscal Year
      We need nominees for all offices:
      • Commander - It shall be the duty of the Post commander to preside at all meetings of the Post and to have general supervision over the business and affairs of the Post, and such officer shall be the chief executive officer of the Post. The commander shall perform such other duties as directed by the Post. 
      • 1st vice-commander - The 1st vice-commander shall assume and discharge the duties of the office of commander in the absence or disability of, or when called upon by the Post commander. The 1st vice-commander also serves as the chair of the Membership Committee
      • 2nd vice-commander - The 2nd vice-commander shall assume and discharge the duties of the office of commander in the absence or disability of the Post commander and 1st vice-commander, or when called upon by the Post commander. The 2nd vice-commander is the chair of the House and Entertainment Committee.
      • Adjutant - The adjutant shall have charge of and keep a full and correct record of all proceedings of all meetings, keep such records as the Department and National Organizations may require, render reports of membership annually or when called upon at a meeting, and under direction of the commander handle all correspondence of the Post. 
      • Finance Officer - The finance officer/treasurer of the Post shall have charge of all finances and see that they are safely deposited in some local bank or banks and shall report at the monthly meeting the condition of the finances of the Post, with such recommendations as may deem expedient or necessary for raising funds with which to carry on the activities of the Post. The finance officer/treasurer shall sign all checks disbursing the monies of the Post, and shall furnish such surety bonds in such sum as shall be fixed by the Post Executive Committee. 
      • Historian - The Post historian shall be charged with the individual records and incidents of the Post and Post members, and shall perform such other duties as may properly pertain to the office as may be determined by the Post or the Executive Committee. 
      • Chaplain - The Post chaplain shall be charged with the spiritual welfare of the Post comrades and will offer divine but nonsectarian service in the event of dedications, funerals, public functions, etc., adhere to such ceremonial rituals as are recommended by the National or Department headquarters from time to time. 
      • Sergeant-at-Arms - The sergeant-at-arms shall preserve order at meetings and shall perform such other duties as may be from time to time assigned by the Post Executive Committee.
      • Executive Committeeman/woman - The Executive Committeeman/woman shall represent the Post at large in the Executive Committee. [Note: it is the suggestion of Commander Blevins that we establish a tradition of electing a Past Commander as the Executive Committeeman/woman. This will allow the greatest continuity to the management of the Post. However, if a Past Commander does not wish to serve in this capacity, there is no Past Commander to serve, or if the Post, for whatever reason, prefers someone else, then any other member of the Post might be nominated.]
    • Department of Alabama Convention - We will discuss the location, costs, and number of delegates required to have a vote at the convention.
    • Legion Baseball - Post 229 will be sponsoring at least one baseball team for American Legion Baseball this summer.
    • Boys State - We have sponsored a couple students for Boys State this year.
  • The good of The American Legion
    • Run for the Wall - Information was disseminated regarding the upcoming Run for the Wall event, which will leave from California on 15 May and arrive in Washington, DC, on 25 May.
