Huntsville Madison County Transportation Coalition

The following is an email the Post received. Though not directly veteran-related, invariably some veterans might need the assistance this program is providing, so it is being shared for your consideration.

Dear Friend:

I need your assistance to spread the word about a new and important resource to assist low income individuals maintain their employment.

Phoenix is participating with Huntsville Assistance Program, Family Services Center, Alabama DHR, Christian Women’s Job Corp, Crisis Service Center, Huntsville Housing Authority, the City of Huntsville, TARCOG and the St Vincent De Paul Society to orchestrate the Huntsville Madison County Transportation Coalition. The mission of the coalition is to help low income individuals maintain transportation resources to keep their jobs . I’ve very proud that we’ve been able to assemble a significant number of players for this effort and are using existing organizations and their/our resources to address a critical issue for the working poor in Madison County. We would welcome any other nonprofit, government or religious organization to the table.

As you are aware, many low income families are just one brake job or water pump dying from homelessness. The car breaks down. It costs $400 to repair. They don’t have $400. They miss work. Then they lose their jobs.

The St Vincent De Paul Society has a national car donation program and they have agreed that any vehicles coming in from over 25 north Alabama Counties will be credited to their north Alabama account to benefit our efforts. They will pick up a variety of vehicles, boats, etc, provide the owner a tax deductible receipt and then sell the item. The proceeds come to our coalition here in Madison County.

We will then use those dollars to fund up to $750 of repairs on vehicles for individuals deemed qualified through the Huntsville Assistance Program. The individual has to pay 20% of the repair cost (up to $150) and we’ll fund the balance; up to $600.

Currently we have $7500 to start the program but we need to get a funding stream going as the need for this kind of assistance is substantial!

If a person has a auto, commercial vehicle, motorcycles, RV, boat & Trailer (the item must be “towable”) and wishes to donate that item to help someone KEEP THEIR JOB, all they have to do is call 1-800-322-8284.

We have yard signs and banners that we hope churches and businesses will display to help spread the word plus maybe include the information in the church bulletins, church and company newsletters, etc.

Thanks so much for helping!
