The October meeting was held on 10 October 2013 at 1900 at the Madison Senior Citizen Center 1289 Hughes Road, Madison, Alabama.

Call to Order
Approval of Minutes
The minutes of the August meeting were read and unanimously approved.

  • Adjutant's ReportAdjutant Pruett reported two new members for October 2013 and one transfer. Ten members paid their dues. Adjutant report that 56% of our members have paid for the year. The Post has verified discharge paperwork for 29 Legionnaires. The commander and adjutant are still working on contacting all members that have not turn in their DD214.
  • Finance ReportFinance Officer Haugen reported that he has ordered Poppies for Veteran Day Poppies Weekend to be held on 9 and 10 November. He has received our bill for insurance on our storage building for the amount of $425.00 to be paid. He has written a check for $250.00 to be donated to James Clemens JROTC on 11 November 2013. He stated that this will leave a balance of approximately $1000. His report was properly motion, second and approved.
  • Awards
    • Commander Woods presented Sgt of Arms, Vic Van Leeuwen with 2013, 100% Membership Award. Vic received this award for his outstanding performance as Adjutant and accomplishing 100% membership enrollment for 2013. Past Commander Jeremy Blevins will also be honored with this award.
    • Adjutant Doug Pruett presented Legionnaire David Silvernail with his award pin for signup his first member for 2014.
  • District 12 Report
    The District 12 minutes that were provided by our Historian/Past Commander Jeremy Blevins was read in his absence by Commander Woods. These are the Highlights of these minutes:
    • October meeting was held at Post 176 in Huntsville.
    • Guest Speaker: Department Jr. Vice commander David Hartline.
    • Two upcoming training sessions were report by Commander Hartline. The first will be in Scottsboro on Saturday, October 26th. The second is on Sunday October 27th at Post 15 in Decatur at 1300. The Training sessions will be 4 hours.
    • This training will teach Legionnaires how to assist veteran in filing paperwork for VA benefits. We can help out by assisting vets with knowing what forms to fill out, and helping them out before they get to the VA Office. We can also help with transportation. (If any Post 229 members attend please let Commander Woods know.)
    • Committee Report:
      Membership in District is at 55.36%
    • On the IRS Issues:
      The Legion at the national level has passed a resolution on this issue and is working with Congress to get IRS regulations changed. One Legionnaire present mentioned that one alternative might be to have all members sign up for VA e-benefits, which validates the veteran proof of service.
    • New Business:
      • Mid-winter conference will be 17-19 January 2014 at the Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach. Rates are $99/night and booking ID# is 9453.
      • Post 15 in Decatur was voted the 2014 District 12 Post of the Year.
      • National Commander Visit to Alabama:
        National Commander will be in Alabama 8-14 November and visiting some posts. He will arrive in Alabama and travel to Huntsville. His itinerary is as follows: 
        • November 8, 2013 6-7 PM, Reception Huntsville, Marriott. Everyone is invited. Please RSVP to Department headquarters at 334-262-6638.
        • November 9, 2013 Visit the Space and Rocket Center and Florence Post 1
        • November 10, 2013 depart Huntsville for Birmingham for Veteran Day Activities. He will be the Guest Speaker for National Veteran Award Dinner at BJCC East Ballroom. Tickets are required.
        • November 11,2013 Birmingham World Peace Luncheon and Veterans Day Parade
        • November 12, 2013 American Village and Alabama National Cemetery – Montevallo
        • November 13, 2013 will visit Robert Hoard Veterans Home in Pell City. Will visit Post 107 and Post 171.
        • November 14, 2013 Depart Alabama 
Unfinished Business
  • Veteran Day Weekend Events/Tasks
    • The membership discussed and made a motion and approved the following action to take place in celebration of our Veteran Day events: American Legion Post 229 will be posting American Flags on Veteran graves I the three (3) Madison cemeteries on 2 Nov 2013 at 9:00 AM. On 7 December 2013 the flags will be replaced with wreaths/ribbons at each cemetery and then removed on 4 January 2014 (time to be announced).
    • Representatives for each Cemetery:

      • Mill Road North – Carl Dow
      • Mill road South – Doug Pruett
      • Madison Blvd Cem: - Bill McGahey
    • We are requesting help from our members and community. We are asking that on Hughes Road David Silvernail and his Boys Scout works that cemetery. We will try and get one of the JROTC to work Mill Road North and South and our other JROTC work Madison Blvd.
    • Veteran Day Poppies 9-10 November 2013. The Commander sent out an email on October 7, 2013, time 11:47 AM stating the following:
      "Our Post will be giving out Poppies in remembrance of our Veteran. By presenting Poppies at various locations our post receive donations from our community. These donations make up a 95% of our operational budget. Out of this budget we take care of our various charitable donations, such as High school JROTCs’, Blue Star Banner, etc. I am asking your support and asking you to volunteer for a minimum of two hours (2) on either the 9th or 10th of November 2013. We will be manning two locations both Walmart locations in Madison: (1) Walmart, 8650 Highway 20 W, Madison, Al 35758; (2) Walmart, 8580 Highway 72 W, Madison. With the two locations manning hours will be 9 am to 5 pm on both days. We will man both entrance at each location will have three Legionaries at each location with one Legionnaires at each door and one floater. The shifts are as follows: 9-11; 11-1; 1-3; 3-5.     • The Mayor has been notified that there will not be a Veteran Day ceremony at our Veteran Park in Madison on 11 November 2013.
    • Our American legion Post 229 will participate in the Huntsville Veteran Day Parade on November 11, 2013. Huntsville has requested that our World War II vets ride in the parade. Past Commander Carl Dow and 2nd Vice Bill McGahey oversee this action.
    • Past Commander Jeremy Blevins will be leading a Color Guard in the Parade. Volunteers are needed.
New Business
  • Motion was approved that Sgt of Arms, Vic Van Leeuwen represent the Legion with the Optimist Club and the Rainbow Mountain Homemakers in setting up a food venture at the next Madison City Festival.
  • Took time to meet and greet our new member Ricky Spears.
