September 2014 Meeting Minutes

The meeting was held on 11 September 2014 1900 at the Madison Senior Center. Post 229 members present were Carlos Woods- Commander, Nancy Burch- First Vice-Commander, Douglas Pruett- Adjutant, James Haughen- Finance Officer, Rickey Spears- Chaplain, Jeremy Blevins- Administrative Officer, Sandra Bush-Historian, Anthony Bush- County Commander, Charles Anderson, Lester Barnard, Charles Berry, Hollis Bridges, Danny Dillow, Oscar Draper Jr., Monica Dumont, Phillip Evans, Edward Hunter, Leondra Kelly, Mike Leech, Billy Petit, and David Silvernail. Also present was Kevin Walker, District 12 Veteran Service Officer. 


Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Commander Woods at 1900 Hrs. The video of Alan Jackson’s “Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?” was played as a tribute to the victims of 11 September 2001 in recognition of Patriots Day.  Opening prayer was lead by Chaplain Spears.

Approval of Previous Minutes
Adjutant Pruett motioned that the August meeting minutes be accepted as posted on Post 229 web site. Seconded Legionnaire Dow, and unanimously accepted by all legionnaires present.


Reports
  • Adjutant-
    Adjutant Pruett reported that the Department of Alabama now shows Post 229 at 66.4% renewed, with several renewals pending submittal.  Total post roster shows 202 members paid for 2014 or 2015.  Current paid for 2015 dues are 85 renewals plus 10 Paid-Up-For-Life. MyLegion.org roster shows 10 expired members, not with last year paid being 2013.  Motion to accept the Adjutant’s Report was made by County Commander Anthony Bush, seconded by Chaplain Spears, and passed by voice vote.
  • Finance -
    Finance Officer Haugen was reported that the only transactions have been dues deposits and payments to the Department of Alabama.   Motion to accept the Finance Officer’s Report was made by Legionnaire Leech, seconded by Legionnaire Monica Dumont, and passed by voice vote.
  • District Report-
    District Vice Commander Blevins reported that there has not been a District 12 meeting since the last Post 229 meeting, and there was no report to be made.
  • County Report-
    Commander Bush reported that Boys State will be a combined effort of all posts within Madison County, instead of separate posts sending students.  Commander Bush also reported that the future Oratorical Contest was in doubt, but agreed to continue efforts on that matter after Legionnaire present expressed the desire to continue with the Oratorical Contest.  Commander Bush will keep all posts updated as the situation changes.
  • NAVFOC-
    Past Commander Bridges reported that there was no significant report from the NAVFOC, but that the DAV is re-conducting their elections due to a procedural issue.
  • Americanism Committee-                                                                                                              
    No report on post recruiting effort/campaign and establishment of Honor Guard.
  • American Legion Riders Committee-                                                                                 
    Committee Chairwoman Dumont advised that there was no report this month, and Commander  Woods reminded all present to contact Monica Dumont if interested in joining.
Unfinished Business

·         Post Historian-
Legionnaire Sandra Bush was installed as Historian for Post 229 by Past Commander Blevins.



        
·         Madison Street Festival-                                                                                                        
      Adjutant Pruett reported that some Legionnaires have volunteered to work the Madison Street Festival, but that additional volunteers are still needed, particularly for Saturday afternoon.
·         Memorial Committee-                                                                                                              
Commander Woods advised he has asked a specific unnamed Legionnaire to chair the Memorial Committee, and that he is awaiting an answer before naming the Legionnaire.  Legionnaire Vannoy agreed to be a Committee Member.

New Business

·         Service Officer-
Commander Woods welcomed District 12 Veterans Service Officer Kevin Walker as Guest Speaker.  VSO Walker provided an overview of assistance that can be provided in filing claims for VA claims, and gave examples without naming veterans of specific situations.  VSO Walker asked that any Legionnaires in need of assistance contact him directly, to discuss individual situation in a private setting, and offered to meet at a Legionnaire’s home if needed. ·         Wreaths-
Commander Woods reminded Legionnaires present that the wreaths will be placed on all veteran graves within Madison City Limits and that volunteers will be needed for 8 November 2014 starting at 9:00 a.m...
·         Poppy Give Away-
Commander Woods reported that Post 229 will be handing out Poppies at the Wal-Marts on Madison Blvd. and Highway 72 during Veteran’s Day Weekend of 8-9 November 2014. Three volunteers are needed for 3 shifts of 2 hours, with a minimum of 3 volunteers per shift.  Total volunteers needed are 18 per day to cover both locations.
·         Honorary Life Members-
Adjutant Pruett reported that The American Legion By-Laws do allow for a post to recognize members as Honorary Life Members, and that the post agrees to pay the dues from that point onward.  Adjutant Pruett also reported that the three veterans of World War II in Post 229 are Legionnaire Orval Cooper, Legionnaire George Quinn Jr., and Legionnaire Byron Sampieri. Adjutant Pruett expressed the desire to mane Legionnaires Cooper and Sampieri as Honorary Life Member, and recognize Legionnaire Quinn separately, since he is already a Paid Up for Life Member.  Legionnaire Dow made the motion to recognize the WWII veterans as suggested, and the motion was seconded by Commander Bush, and passed by voice vote.
·         Administrative Officer-
Jeremy Blevins announced that he is leaving Post 229, and transferring to Post 201.  Post 201 was recently established in Research Park, and Legionnaire Blevins has been asked to join to help get Post fully established.  Legionnaire Phillip Evans has agrees to assume the duties of Administrative Officer, and was so appointed and recognized by Commander Woods.

For the Good of the Legion
The Post welcomed new and prospective members.

The meeting was adjourned by Commander Woods at 2020 Hrs.
