Feb 2015 Meeting Minutes

Members present were Commander Carlos Woods, First Vice-Commander Monica Dumont, Second Vice-Commander Bill McGahey, Chaplain Rickey Spears, Legionnaires Leondra Kelley, Oscar Draper Sr., Mike Marcel, Lelia Woods, Larry Frakes, Jerry Tepper, Jim Haughen, Claudette Grant, Tom McKinney, and Edward Dunst.

  • Adjutant
    • Adjutant absent, report given by commander:  138% at this time, with 208 members.  The    report was approved by vote.
  • Finance
    • Finance officer absent, no report this month
  • State of the District/County Report
    • No change in district status, membership is still hot topic
  • NAVFOC
    • Representative Carl Dow reported no new activity at this time
  • DAV
    • No report
  • Committees Reports:
    • Americanism  Committee
      • Law enforcement Officer of the year is still in work with outline in progress.  Members voted to recognize only Madison Police officers this year and possibly expand awards to include Madison Fire Department personnel in 2016. Budget for awards proposed at $50-70.  Approved by vote.
    • Membership Drive (1st Vice- Recruiting Script)
      • Carry over to next mtg.
Unfinished Business
    • Silvernail Eagle Court of Honor Report
      • Complete, Commander wants better participation by post members in the future.
    • Memorial Park
      • Designs for the rebuild of the Monument are in progress. Once received it will come before the membership for review and approval. Once approved funds will be raised to complete the monument.
    • Fund Raiser –  Auto Show Finance Officer
      • Two venues being worked for the fund raiser car show.  Skate park parking lot being looked at and we are still trying to get Madison schools operations supervisor to meet with post and approve using the stadium parking lot.  The date is tentative set for 2 May 2015. 
    • Oratorical Contest Madison -7 Feb 14/County 17 Feb 2015
      • Posts 201 & 229 contest held 7 February with Winston Van being the winner.
      • County contest is 14 February at Calhoun community college, 9am.
      • Post 229 will donate $200 to winner of oratorical contest on Saturday. Approved by vote.
    • JROTC Donations and awards presentation
      • JROTC donations presented to Sparkman and James Clemens High Schools.
      • JROTC Military and Scholastic Excellent awards presented at Sparkman High School.
New Business
  • Memorial Day and Week Events
    • Commander stated that Col Hurd, JROTC commander will be the speaker and Larry Frakes will sing the national anthem.
  • Open to the Floor
    • Member proposed we look at having a speaker address gun safety and legal responsibilities at a future meeting.
    • With so much information at each mtg. a proposal was made to start the mtg. at 6:30 and run to 8:00.   Commander Carlos Woods will check with senior center staff
