October 2016 Meeting Minutes

Call to Order

The meeting of American Legion Post 229 was held at the Madison , Hwy 72,
Madison starting at 7 PM and was called to order by Commander Woods. Opening
prayer was offered by member Chaplain Dewey Cockman. Legionnaire in attendance
were Commander Carlos Woods, Adjutant Larry Vannoy, 2nd Vice Bill McGahey,
Finance Officer Leondra Kelley, Chaplain Dewey Cockman, Judge Advocate Mario
Ventura, Andy Cox, David Silvernail, Tom McKinney, Edward Ptaschek, Jerry Tepper,
Richard Blanton Jr., Ameena Gordon, Joseph Joiner, Edward Durst, Vic van
leeuewen, Cherish Croft, James Rogers, David Silvernail, Yvette Torbert and guest
Dwayne Ptaschek.

Approval of Previous Minutes

Commander asked the meeting attendees if all had the opportunity to review the
14 Sep 2016 Minutes and if there were any corrections. There were no
corrections and were approved by the members present.


  •       Sick and Shut in:  Commander Woods gave a report on the health of Legionnaires

Louis Rizzo, Monica Dumont, and Carl Dow. Commander Woods asked all
members to keep them and family’s in their prayers.

  •       New members were introduced along with member spouses.

  •        Adjutant:
o   Adjutant Larry Vannoy reported that we have 5 new members and 9 renewals since
the last report, putting us at at 62% of our 227 members. We need 87 more
members to renew to be at a 100%. If you have a friend that is a post member,
please remained them to renew. The Adjutant report was approved by the attending

  •        Finance: 
    •        Finance Officer Leondra Kelley gave his financial report on both the Operating and Memorial Funds. The post participated in Madison Street Festival on 1 October, we made $100 on the sale of cupcakes and cinnamon rolls. We are looking at what our participation will be next year. We continue to sell pavers and benches for our new monument. There are a total of 360 pavers available for purchase as part of phase 1 of the monument replacement. We are still seeking $15k to fund the completion of the monument. The desire is to get as many of the members that want to purchase a paver, to do so soon and they will be placed closest to the monument. Pavers cost $100 and $200 each based on size. We also have two more benches for sale at $2500 for phase 1.
    •      The finance report was approved by the members present.

  •       State of the District/County Report:
    •      State, Commander Woods. Legion is continuing to pushing veteran benefits. Membership needs to grow to be able to push issues by local, state and national political leaders. Please work hard to bring in new members.


  •        North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Coalition NAVFOC:
    •       Bill McGahey attended the 7 Sep meeting at the Madison Senior Center.

  •        Disabled Veterans (DAV):
    •        Nothing new to report

Committees Reports:

  •        Americanism Committee
    •      Chairman, Tom McKinney. Madison police depart declined participating in Police Officer Of The Year award this year, Commander Woods wants Chairman McKinney and him to meet with the new mayor to revisit the subject. Firefighter of The Year, still trying to make contact with the acting fire chief.

  •        Membership Committee: 
    •         Membership status was reported during the Adjutant report.

  •        Fund Raising Committee:
    •        Fundraising was discussed under the finance committee report.

Unfinished Business

  •        Bi-Laws:
    •       Updates to the post Bi-Laws were reviewed and several changes were recommended. Updates to the changes will be brought to the next meeting. Legionnaire Cherish Croft is making the discussed changes.

New Business

  • Veteran's Day Events
    • There is a Veteran's Day parade in downtown Huntsville
    • There is a Veteran's Day breakfast at the Madison YMCA on 10 November, an email will be sent out with details for those that want to participate. Emphasis will be on Blue Star and Gold Star families. If anyone knows of such families, let Bill McGahey know.
    • The Association of the US Army is having a dinner at the Von Braun Civic Center on November 10th. Commander Woods and Adjutant Vannoy will be attending.
