January 2017 Meeting Minutes


Call to Order
 

The meeting of American Legion Post 229 was held at the Madison Senior Center, Hughes Road, Madison starting at 7 PM and was called to order by Commander Woods. Opening prayer was offered by member Member Ricky Spears. Legionnaires in attendance were Commander Carlos Woods, Adjutant Larry Vannoy, 1st Vice James Vance, 2nd Vice Bill McGahey, Finance Officer Leondra Kelley, Sgt of Arms Mike Marcel, Deputy Sgt of Arms Earl Watts, Ricky Spears Jr., Americanism Chairperson Tom McKinney, Stan Walker, Edward Durst, David Silvernail, Ameena Gordon, and Boy Scout Troop leaders Bills Rice, Don Rice, Richard Jones, Monica Dumont, Yvette Torbert, and  Shelton Torbert.

Guests: Daughters Of The American Revolution Jean Downs, Kenny Sumner, Ms. Innis.
 
Approval of Previous Minutes


Commander asked the meeting attendees if all had the opportunity to review the 8 Dec 2016 Minutes and if there were any corrections. The meeting minutes were approved by the members present. 

 
 

 

 
Reports

       Sick and Shut in:  Commander Woods gave a report on the health of Legionnaires Jerry Tepper, Carl Dow who is now at the Tut Fann Veteran's nursing home in Huntsville. Byron Samperi is in an assisted living facility, Dewy Cockman is feeling poorly, Louis Rizzo, who has moved to Texas to be with family, is doing poorly. Commander Woods asked all members to keep them and families in their prayers.

       Adjutant:
o   Adjutant Larry Vannoy reported that we have new member and 11 renewals and two new members since the last report, putting our renewals at approximately 90%. We need 25 renewals to get to 100%.  
o   The Adjutant report was approved by the attending members.

       Finance:
o   Finance Officer Leondra Kelley provided the current status of the post accounts. There are a total of 360 pavers available for purchase as part of phase 1 of the monument replacement. We are still seeking $15k to fund the completion of the monument. The desire is to get as many of the members that want to purchase a paver to do so soon and they will be placed closest to the monument. Pavers cost $100 and $200 each based on size. We also have two more benches for sale at $2500 for phase 1. The finance report was approved by the members present.
 
       State of the District/County Report:
o    State, Commander Woods stated that the mid-winter conference will be taking place in Montgomery this coming weekend.
o    The District 12 meeting did not take place last weekend because of the expected bad weather.
o    The Madison County wide Oratorical Contest is taking place at the Madison City Council Chambers on 28m January. The event will start at 10 AM and is expected to last until 2 PM. Judges have been identified. Tom McKinney is the Post 2298 representative. Our post will be putting forward $350 plus the cost of refreshments.
 
       North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Coalition NAVFOC:
o   1st Vice, James Vance reported the is a fundraiser pancake breakfast at Applebee's in Madison starting at 7 AM for those interested.
o   Next month there will be an installation of officers.

       Disabled Veterans (DAV):
o   Nothing new to report

Committees Reports:

       Americanism Committee
o   Chairman, Tom McKinney stated that we are gong to meet with the Mayor of Madison along with acting police and fire chiefs this month to make an award for the Firefighter and Police Officer of the Year.

  
       Membership Committee: 
o   Membership status was reported during the Adjutant report.
 

       Monument Committee:
o   1st Vice, James Vance stated that the plan remains to have the monument finished and ready for dedication by Memorial Day.
o   A monument fundraising committee was recommended and the motion was made to establish it. The membership approved the motion to establish a Memorial Fundraising Committee.

 
       Post Home:
o   Nothing new to report.
 
       Fund Raising Committee: 
o   Fundraising was discussed under the finance committee report.

Unfinished Business
 

 
 
 
  • Bylaws:
o  The red-lined Post 229 Bylaws were presented to the membership for approval. Judge Advocate Mario Ventura motioned for approval and seconded by Tom McKinney, the membership voted and approved the changes to the Bylaws.


New Business

       Move of Membership Meetings
o   The Masonic Lunar Lodge on Eastview Drive has offered to let the post use their facility for post meetings. This will allow the post to extend meeting times as required, allow for additional days to have meetings and give relief to the Madison Senior Center staff. A motion was made to approve using the masonic lodge and to hold our February meeting there. The membership present approved the motion.

 
Near Term Upcoming Events:

  • Next Membership Meeting will be at the Lunar Masonic Lodge #918, 740 Eastview Drive, Madison, AL 35758.
  • Picking up Holiday Wreaths. We will be picking up the holiday wreaths on the 14th of January at 10 AM, Madison Memory Gardens.
