December 2016 Meeting Minutes


Call to Order


The meeting of American Legion Post 229 was held at the IHOP, Hwy 72, Madison starting at 7 PM and was called to order by Commander Woods. Opening prayer was offered by member Chaplain Dewy Cockman. Legionnaire in attendance were Commander Carlos Woods, Adjutant Larry Vannoy, 1st Vice James Vance, 2nd Vice Bill McGahey, Finance Officer Leondra Kelley, Judge Advocate Mario Ventura, Sgt of Arms Mike Marcel, Deputy Sgt of Arms Earl Watts, IT Cherish Croft, Ricky Spears, Richard Balnton Jr, Americanism Chairperson Tom McKinney, Joseph Joiner, Rickey Spears, Stan Walker, Edward Durst, Edward Ptaschek, Bill Petit, Richard Blanton, Oscar Draper, and Jerry Tepper.
 
Approval of Previous Minutes


Commander asked the meeting attendees if all had the opportunity to review the 17 Nov 2016.  There was one correction recommended by the finance officer to increase our general fund balance by $10, it was misreported during the November meeting finance report.  With this correction the meeting minutes were approved by the members present.
 
 
Blue Star Presentation

 
 
Legionnaire Ricky Spears and wife Phyllis were presented a “Blue Star” banner for their daughter Rickard Spears who is currently serving in the US Army.
 
 

 
Reports

       Sick and Shut in:  Commander Woods gave a report on the health of Legionnaire Carl Dow continues to reside in the Tut Fann Veteran’s nursing home in Huntsville.  Louis Rizzo and wife are still recovering from their illnesses.  Commander Woods asked all members to keep them and families in their prayers.

       Adjutant:
o   Adjutant Larry Vannoy reported that we have 3 new members and 15 renewals since the last report, putting our renewals at 80%. 
o   The Adjutant report was approved by the attending members.

       Finance:
o   Finance Officer Leondra Kelley provided the current status of our three accounts: general fund, veteran's park fund, and monument fund. The budget was approved by voice vote of the membership.

       State of the District/County Report:
o    State, Commander Woods was unable to attend the district meeting so had nothing to report.
 
       North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Coalition NAVFOC:
o   1st Vice, James Vance attended the meeting that took place the day before. Elections were held and Beverly Lowe was re-elected president. The is an opening for secretary they are trying to fill. On Jan 14th, there will be an "Army Space Professional Association & Legacy 4 Korean War Veterans" fundraiser pancake breakfast at Applebee's in Madison 7-10AM for those interested.

       Disabled Veterans (DAV):
o   Nothing new to report

Committees Reports:

       Americanism Committee
o   Chairman, Tom McKinney stated that we will still want to meet with Mayor Finley regarding the Police and Firefighter of the year awards. The adjutant will set up another meeting.
o   A $250 check was presented to the Bob Jones Air Force ROTC program. We still need to meet with the Sparkman High School Army ROTC program. McKinney will contact the commander to make a presentation.
  
       Membership Committee: 
o   Membership status was reported during the Adjutant report.
 
       Monument Committee:
o   James Vance stated that we are finalizing the names that are to go on the monument. We continue to sell pavers. We are also selling three benches as part of phase 1, one has been sold.
o   Commander Woods stated that he is going to get with the newspaper to advertise selling of the pavers.

o   IT Chairwoman Cherish Croft is preparing an electronic version of the form that she will email; out to those interested.
o   Would like to have Legion members to make their paver purchases for phase 1 by the 15th of January. 
 
       Post Home:
o   Adjutant Larry Vannoy and member Jerry Tepper stated that they had a meeting with the Masonic Lodge on Eastview Drive regarding the use of their facility as a meeting place. The lodge is very receptive and we hope to have more news at the next meeting.
 
       Fund Raising Committee: 
o   Fundraising was discussed under the finance committee report.

New Business

       Placing Wreaths at Madison Cemeteries:
o   Placement will take place at 10 AM on the 17th of December. Volunteers should meet at Madison Memorial Gardens. At 9:15 those with pickup trucks should meet at the storage facility to gather to get the wreaths for placement.
o   Wreath pickup is scheduled for January 7th. (Due to inclement weather, the pickup day was postponed to 14 January.)
 
       Web Site Maintenance
o   Member Cherish Croft has offered help maintain and updating the post website.

       Oratorical Contest
o     The Madison County Oratorical Contest will be taking place on January 28th at the Madison City Hall on Hughes Road. Volunteers are needed for several positions including judges, time keepers, escorts and score keepers. Let Commander Woods know if interested in participating.
o     We are seeking speakers. The prizes are $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Tom McKinney is our liaison with Madison schools.
 
       Veterans of North Alabama Service Assistance Program Donation
o     This is a service organization that provides household goods for veterans separating from the military and setting up a household.  Jane Dow is President/CEO of the organization and has received a matching grant that will be used to purchase a replacement transportation vehicle.  The post voted on and approved a $300 donation towards matching funds for the grant.
