April 2017 Meeting Minutes


Call to Order
 

The membership meeting was held at the Masonic Lunar Lodge #918, 740 Eastview Drive, Madison starting at 7pm. First Vice Commander James Vance conducted the meeting with the opening prayer given by member David Silvernail. Commander Woods absence due to other obligation.

Legionnaire in attendance were 1st Vice Commander James Vance, Adjutant Larry Vannoy, 2nd Vice Bill McGahey, Judge Advocate Mario Ventura, Asst Sgt of Arms Mike Marcel and Earl Watts, Finance Officer Leondra Kelley, Tom McKinney, Richard Blanton, Alan Cerny, Sherwin Calendar, Umar Hicks, Edward Durst, and Chris Brown.

 
Approval of Previous Minutes
 
1st Vice Commander Vance asked the meeting attendees if all had the opportunity to review the 9 March meeting minutes and if there were any corrections.  The meeting minutes were approved by the members present.

 
Reports

Member Sherwin Calendar gave a status of the “’Forever Young” organization which offers wishes for senior veterans.   The organization raised $350 at a local restaurant to help with the cost of a trip to England and a Washington DC trip.

       Sick and Shut in: 
    • Past post commander Carl Dow remains at the Tut Fann veteran’s nursing home.
       Adjutant:
 
    • Adjutant Larry Vannoy reported that we are now at 101% renewals and new members.  Currently, Post 229 is the only post in Madison County to achieve at least 100%.  With the transfer’s into the post, our total membership is approaching 250.  
    • Adjutant Vannoy discussed the upcoming recruiting events being sponsored by the state, this is a Statewide effort.  For Madison County, tentatively the days are 20-22 April (Thu-Sat) at Redstone Arsenal PX and shopettes and local Walmarts from 10AM – 2PM.  Further information and requests for volunteers will be forthcoming.

       Finance:
    • Finance Officer Leondra Kelley reported the current status of the post accounts  (operating account, monument account, downtown memorial account and the post home account).  The finance report was approved by the members present.  
       State of the District/County Report:
    • Commander Woods attended the District meeting but was not present to speak to what was discussed in the meeting.
 
       North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Coalition NAVFOC:
    • Nothing new to report. 
  •        Disabled Veterans (DAV):
    • Nothing new to report


Committees Reports:

       Americanism Committee
    • Legionnaire McKinney stated that the Oratorical Contest is complete for the state and a nice scholarship check was issued to the Madison County winner, runner up and third place participant.
    • Boy’s State is coming up.  Huntsville Post 237 is taking the lead.  Cost to attend is $250 plus $50 for the bus.  Tom McKinney is taking the lead to identify deserving high school juniors at Bob Jones, James Clements, Sparkman and private schools to participate in the week long leadership program being held May 28th through 2 June at the University of Alabama.
    • Right now there are between 25-30 boys planning on attending but some schools have not submitted the required paperwork.  Deadline is May 5th.
    • McKinney also is working with the three area high schools; Bob Jones, James Clemens and Sparkman to make awards for Academic Excellence and Military Excellence.   Sparkman has already made their awards.  Bob Jones will be made on 1 May at 1700 in the school cafeteria. All of Post 229 is invited.   McKinney is working to find out the date for the James Clemens’ award ceremony.

  
       Membership Committee: 
 
    •      The upcoming recruiting event was presented during the Adjutant's report.

       Monument Committee
    • James Vance stated that the second of the three payments has been made and installation is to start on the 20th of April.
 
       Post Home Committee:
    • Adjutant Vannoy remains chairman of the Post Home Committee. Activities will pick up after Memorial Day towards getting a permanent facility. 
       Fund Raising Committee: 
    • Nothing new to report.
 

Unfinished Business
 
  • Poppy give away at the local Walmarts will be taking place the weekend of Memorial Day, 27 and 28 May.  Post members will be getting an email asking for help in manning tables at the Walmart on Madison Blvd, Hwy 72 and Wall Triana 

  • Web Site:
    • Nothing new to report 

  • Monument Pavers:
    • The post continues to get applications for personalized pavers to go in front of the new monument. 
 
  • Memorial Day Planning:
    • James Vance is heading up the Memorial Day Ceremony.
    • Member Ralph Cobb is drafting up a program.  State Senator Bill Holzclaw is the guest speaker.
    • We are having our monument dedication at the same time.
    • Flags will be put out on 20 May at 10 AM, they will be picked up on the 2nd of June.
    • Poppies are going to be given out at the three area Walmarts on the 27th and 28th of May.  Be on the lookout for email requesting volunteers.


New Business
  • Donation to the Masonic Lodge
    • Post members voted to give a donation to the Masonic Lodge in the amount of $50/month to be provided on a quarterly basis.
  • Memorial Day Planning
    • The post voted to pay Jeff Stephens $200 for a sound system at the Memorial Day ceremony.
  • Upcoming Elections
    • Post Officer Elections are coming up.  Votes are to be taken at the May 11th membership meeting.  Those wanting to be elected should be present at the May meeting.  2nd Vice, Bill McGahee is taking nominations.  Member Chris Brown stated he is interested in the post Judge Advocate position and presented his resume and qualifications.
    • Positions where there are no candidates that we are aware of are 2nd Vice Commander and Post Finance Officer. 
  • Employer's Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR)
    • Chris Brown spoke of the ESGR program he is volunteering for.  The program involves meeting with National Guard and military reserve units as well as employers to educate them on their rights for re-employment after serving on a deployment.  Awards are presented to employers for exceptional support to their military members.  This may be an opportunity for the post to team up with the ESGR.   There is a breakfast on Friday the 21st at 0730 at the Boeing facility outside of Gate 9.
