May 2017 Meeting Minutes

Call to Order

The membership meeting was held at the Masonic Lunar Lodge #918, 740 Eastview Drive, Madison starting at 7pm. The meeting was called to order by Commander Carlos Woods. Prayer was given by Legionnaires Stan Walker.

Legionnaires in attendance were Commander Carlos Woods, 2nd Vice Bill McGahey, Past Commander Hollis Bridges, Judge Advocate Mario Ventura, Sgt of Arms Mike Marcel and Earl Watts, Tom McKinney, Richard Blanton, Chris Brown, Jean Brown, Stan Walker, Larry Frakes and new member Andrew Candle. Visitors: Julie Anderson and Dan Anderson, Boy Scout Troop 201.

Approval of Previous Minutes
Commander Woods asked the meeting attendees if all had the opportunity to review the 13April meeting minutes and if there were any corrections. The meeting minutes were approved by the members present.


       Sick and Shut in: 
    • Past post commander Carl Dow remains at the Tut Fann veteran’s nursing home.
    • Legionnaires Joe Joiner passed. No funeral service will be conducted.
    • Adjutant Larry Vannoy was not present at the meeting while attending family business in Colorado.
    • Commander Woods reported that the Post has once again made 108% for 2017, which makes six consecutive years meeting or exceeding recruiting goals.
    • Finance Officer Leondra Kelley not present at meeting due to job obligations. Commander Woods reported that the second payment on the monument has been paid and the pavers that were ordered were also paid for. 
       State of the District/County Report:
    • Commander Woods attended the District meeting and reported that nominees for District and County offices were accepted and the vote will be conducted on 4 June at the next district meeting. 
       North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Coalition
    • NAVFOC: Vice Commander McGahey reported that Madison Mayor Paul Finley was at the meeting and presented a brief on the progress of Madison City and the New Providence Project.
  •        Disabled Veterans (DAV):
    •       Nothing new to report

Committees Reports:

       Americanism Committee
    • Legionnaire McKinney stated that the Madison Police Officer of the Year was awarded to Aubrey Walls and the Madison City Council had appointed a new Fire Chief.
    • Boy’s State dinner was held at Post 237. Approximately 45 boys will be attending Boy's State on 28 May 2017 through 3 June 2017. Boy's State will be held at the University of Alabama. Boys attending high school in Huntsville and Madison were present. Boys must be a Junior oink high school to attend. The Post needs volunteers to ride the bus from Huntsville to the University of Alabama to pick up the boys. The bus will be leaving from Post 237 in Huntsville at 8:00am. If you would like to chaperone, please contact Commander Carlos Woods.
    • McKinney is also working with the three area high schools; Bob Jones, James Clemens and Sparkman to make awards for Academic Excellence and Military Excellence. Commander Woods and Americanism Chairman, Tom McKinney, attended Bob Jones AFJROTC award ceremony on 1 May 2017 and is scheduled to attend James Clemens on 13 May 2017.
       Membership Committee: 
    •      It was reported that 13 members had transferred their membership to Post 229 from the State holding Post 1983 and one new member has been recruited during the county wide recruiting drive.
       Monument Committee
    • James Vance was not present at the meeting. Commander Woods and Vice Commander McGahey briefly presented the progess of the monument to be on schedule for 20 May 2017. 
       Post Home Committee:
    • Adjutant Vannoy remains chairman of the Post Home Committee. Activities will pick up after Memorial Day towards getting a permanent facility. 
       Fund Raising Committee: 
    • It was reported that paver sales need to recommence for Madison Veterans Memorial Park.

Unfinished Business

  • Boy Scout Troop 201 Scout leaders, Dan and Julie Anderson were present to ask for Post support in establishing a Venture Troop. The Venture Troop would consist of both boys and girls. A motion to approve was made and a 2nd vote was taken and Post support of a Venture Program was approved.

  • Employer Support of Guard and Reserve (ESGR):
    • Chris Brown spoke of the ESGR program he is volunteering for. The program involves meeting with National Guard, military reserve units and employers to educate them on their rights for re-employment after serving on deployment. Awards are presented to employers for exceptional support to their military members. This may be an opportunity for the Post to team up with the ESGR.

  • Donation to Lunar Lodge:
    • Membership has voted to give Lunar Lodge $150 ($50.00 donation per month for the last 3 months). The vote has been approved.   

  • Placing of Flags:
    • Vice Commander McGahey discussed the Placing of Flags to be held on 20 May 2017 at 10 am at the Madison Memory Garden. McGahey asked for volunteers. Commander Woods agreed to place advertisements in the Madison Record and the Redstone Rocket and ask for support from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and High School JROTCs. 
  • Memorial Day Planning:
    • James Vance is heading up the Memorial Day Ceremony.
    • Member Ralph Cobb is drafting up a program.  State Senator Bill Holzclaw is the guest speaker.
    • We are having our monument dedication at the same time.
    • Flags will be put out on 20 May at 10 AM, they will be picked up on the 2nd of June.
    • Poppies are going to be given out at the three area Walmarts on the 27th and 28th of May.  Be on the lookout for email requesting volunteers.
    • Commander Woods reminded members that volunteers will be needed 29 May 2017 at 8 am to pick up chairs from Post storage, 601 Walton Dr, Madison. We will need a minimum of six pickup trucks. More than 300 chairs will need to be set up and ready for the ceremony to begin at 11:00 am.

  • Elections of New Officers 2018:
    • Elections of new officers for 2018 were held with the following results:
      • Commander: Carlos F. Woods
      • 1st Vice Commander: James Vance
      • 2nd Vice Commander: Earl Watts
      • Adjutant: Larry Vannoy
      • Finance Officer: Leonora Kelly
      • Judge Advocate: Chris Brown
      • Sgt of Arms: Mike Marcel
      • Historian: Richard Blanton
      • Admin Officer: Cherish Croft

New Business
  • Department of Alabama Convention:
    • To be held at the Embassy Suites, Montgomery, AL
    • Occurs 15 - 18 June 2017
    • Need 8 delegated, 8 votes.
    • Voted and approved to send $120 to Alabama State Headquarters to pay $15 per vote. This will give our delegate the right to cast 8 votes at the convention.
    • No volunteers needed. Commander Woods will present the Post and his wife will be attending as a post delegate.
  • Madison Street Festival:
    • Madison Street festival was discuss and three ideas were presented for food and drink. The food items below will be discussed at the next meeting. Table until then.
