Call to Order
The membership meeting was held at the Masonic Lunar Lodge #918, 740 Eastview Drive, Madison starting at 7pm. Meeting called to order by Commander Carlos Woods. Prayer was by Legionnaire Tom McKinney.
Legionnaires in attendance were Commander Carlos Woods, Adjutant Larry Vannoy, 2nd Vice Bill McGahey, Judge Advocate Mario Ventura, Sgt of Arms Earl Watts, 12th District Commander Kevin Walker, Lester Bernard, Chris Brown, David Silvernail, Andrew Caudle, Richard Blanton, Lelia Woods, Tom McKinney, Donald Rice, Edmund Durst, Alan Cerny.
Approval of Previous Minutes
Commander Woods asked the meeting attendees if all had the opportunity to review the May 11th meeting minutes and if there were any corrections. The meeting minutes were approved by the members present.
• Sick and Shut in:
o Past post commander Carl Dow remains at the Tut Fann veteran’s nursing home.
o Larry Vannoy reported that we grew the post from 227 in FY 2016 to 248 members in 2017, a 9% increase. This is six years in a row the Post has grown from the previous year.
o Finance Officer Leondra Kelley not present at meeting due to job obligations. Commander Woods reported that we are about to make the final payment on the monument. We had a successful poppy give away event on Memorial Day weekend where we collected in excess of $5,500 in donations. We also helped a post member veteran in need by helping with his rent for one week. We also paid expenses for the Memorial Day ceremony and monument dedication.
o Approximately $1300 was spent on the Memorial Day ceremony.
o We have an outstanding balance for the monument that we will be paying once we get the final bill.
o We continue to sell pavers and benches for the memorial park for those interested.
• State of the District/County Report:
o Commander Woods attended the District meeting. The election was held and District 12 Commander Kevin Walker was re-elected. Commander Woods was re-elected as the Madison County Commander. Huntsville Post 237 Commander Don Pinkerton was elected the 1st Vice for District 12.
o 15-18 July the State Convention will be taking place in Montgomery. Commander Woods and Lelia Woods will be attending.
o Boy’s State, Tom McKinney headed up the effort for our post. Madison County sent over 40 boys including several from Bob Jones, James Clemens, and Sparkman High Schools.
• North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Coalition NAVFOC:
o No status was reported.
• Disabled Veterans (DAV):
o Nothing new to report.
• Americanism Committee
o Legionnaire McKinney stated that the City of Madison has a new police chief, Dave Jernigan as well as a new fire chief. McKinney intends to meet with the chiefs to talk about the American Legion and annual awards we would like to be part of presenting.
o McKinney along with Commander Woods and Historian Richard Blanton attended ROTC ceremonies at Bob Jones and James Clemens to give awards for academic and military excellence.
• Monument Committee:
o The Madison County Commission is offering us new flag poles, they will be put in place later this summer.
• Membership Committee:
o The 2018 FY starts on 1 July and members will be getting renewal notices very soon. Members can either renew on line or send a check for $45 to the Post 229 post office box.
o Awards for legion members recruiting three or more members qualify for a National Commander Coin. Commander Woods and Adjutant Vannoy qualified.
• Post Home Committee:
o Adjutant Vannoy remains chairman of the post home committee. Activities will pick up after Memorial Day towards getting a permanent facility. We are seeking help with coming up with an artist rendition on what a facility would look like to help with fundraising.
• Fund Raising Committee:
o It was stated that we need to get back selling pavers for our Veterans park.
• Madison Street Festival:
o The membership approved paying a $100 fee for booth space at the Madison Street Festival the 1st Saturday in October. We haven’t decided on what food we might want to sell. We need a committee chairman for this event.
• Placing of Flags:
o Vice Commander McGahey discussed the Placing of Flags to be held on 20 May 2017 at 10 AM at the Madison Memory Garden. McGahey asked for volunteers and Commander stated that he would place advertisements in the Madison Record and the Redstone Rocket, plus ask support from the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and our High School JROTCs.
• Memorial Day
o This year’s Memorial Day Ceremony and Monument Dedication went great. Thanks for all that helped and participated. We got accolades from attending residents and the VIPs that attended.
• Installation of New Officers 2018:
o A swearing in ceremony took place for the following officers. 12th District Commander Kevin Walker resided over the oath of office:

• Girl Scout Troop 926:
o The post voted on and agreed to start supporting Girl Scout Troop 926 and making an annual donation of $250.
