American Legion Post 229

General Membership Meeting Minutes, 12 Oct 2017



Call to Order


The membership meeting was held at the Masonic Lunar Lodge #918, 740 Eastview Drive, Madison starting at 7pm.  Meeting called to order by Commander Carlos Woods. Prayer was given by Stan Walker.

Commander Woods welcomed the membership and recognized Judy Daughtry, President of The Department of Alabama Auxiliary; Sharon Adkins 1 st Vice President; and two additional Alabama Women’s Auxiliary representatives. 

Approval of Previous Minutes


The 14 Septembet meeting minutes were reviewed and approved by the members present.  

Reports


·        Sick and Shut in:

o   None reported.


·       Adjutant:

o   Larry Vannoy reported that we currently have over 63% of 248 members renewed for 2018 thus far. We had a very successful Madison Street Festival Booth and are getting several new members as a result. 


·       Finance:

o   Finance Officer Leondra Kelley presented the current status of our post accounts. The finance report was approved by the members present. 


·       State of the District/County Report:

o   County activities were covered in other parts of the meeting agenda.


·       North Alabama Veterans Fraternal Coalition NAVFOC:

o   There was nothing new to report. Visit their web site at: http://navfoc.org/ for details on the organization and area veteran’s related schedule of activities.


·       Disabled Veterans (DAV):

o   Nothing new to report.


Committees Reports:


·       Americanism Committee

o   Tom McKinney reported that the Police Officer and Firefighter of the year for the City of Madison is progressing. The awards will probably take place in December at a city council meeting.

o   McKinney also reported that the Oratorical Contest taking place in January at Madison City Hall on January 13th. Our post member Tom McKinney will take the lead for the county. The State of Alabama has sent letters to the high schools in the state to introduce the program. McKinney followed that up with a local press release. This will be a combined Madison County competition. McKinney is leading the effort for the county. We will be needing post volunteers to help.


Unfinished Business

·       Madison Street Festival:

o   Because of weather concerns it was decided not to sell parfaits at the festival but we did dell soft drinks and water and cleared approximately $300. We also got several new post members and transfers to our post.

       ·    Storage Facility

o   The storage CONEX box has been purchased from Decatur Container. We need to set a work date for relocating all our equipment from its current location.



New Business

  •   Flag retirement
    • We have been approached by the Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts about having a flag retirement ceremony in November. The 10th of November was mentioned but an alternative date may be proposed.

  • YMCA Veteran’s prayer breakfast. It was proposed by the commander and approved by the membership $300 to sponsor an American Legion table on 4 November. 


Schedule


·       Veteran’s Day, placing flags will take place on Saturday 4 November at 9 AM.
·       Poppy Day Sales 4-5 November at the three local Walmarts, 10 AM – 4 PM.
·    Several events are planned for the week leading up to Veteran’s Day. The post will send out an email listing all the events.



The post meeting adjourned at 7:35 PM in order to start the American Legion Auxiliary Post organizational meeting.


Auxiliary Organizational Meeting

  • Elizabeth Vance and Sandra McKinney, spouses of post members have volunteered to take the lead on organizing a Post 229 Auxiliary.
  • A presentation was made by Judy Daughtry, President of The Department of Alabama Auxiliary on the roles and benefits of being a member Auxiliary. The presentation was followed up with signing up charter members of the Madison Post 229 Auxiliary. 

The evenings activities concluded at 9:15.
